Snow & monkeys: Shiga Kogen, Nagano
As a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11th, we had to cancel two of our most anticipated ski weekend away. Kagura, in Niigata, had damage and some big aftershocks, and our trip there was planned the day after the quake. Considering Daisuke was stuck in Tokyo, I was stuck at work with no public transport home, that was out. The other, a couple of weeks later, a little lodge where we were to stay in Madaro Highlands, Nagano, advised us that their area was short on supplies and they didn't recommend coming. So, 3 weeks later, with highways open and petrol almost readily available, we were anxious to take a day trip to the slopes. Shiba Highlands, in Nagano, was quite a drive, but we were happy to see there was still plenty of good snow to enjoy (and it was empty!). The talk of staying for the whole weekend over a few beers at lunch turned into reality, when we made a single call to a lodge and asked if they were open. So random, and I did miss a potential hanami in Tokyo, but I have to say, the quality company and good times were well worth it. Oh, and the random snow monkeys that hang out in the main street opposite the resort : )
